Crown Lengthening

A precise, minimally invasive way to expose healthy tooth structure — for restorative needs or a more balanced, confident smile.

Crown lengthening is a periodontal procedure used to expose more of the natural tooth structure when additional tooth height is needed for health, function, or aesthetics.

This procedure may be recommended when a tooth is fractured or decayed below the gumline, when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a restoration, or when excess gum tissue makes it difficult to properly restore or maintain a tooth. By carefully reshaping the gum and, when necessary, the underlying bone, crown lengthening can create a healthier foundation for restoring and preserving a compromised tooth.

Modern techniques have made crown lengthening more precise and less invasive than it once was. Depending on the needs of the case, Dr. Kelleher may incorporate dental laser therapy, minimally invasive surgical techniques, or biologic root reshaping to carefully expose the necessary tooth structure while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The goal is to achieve the necessary result while minimizing trauma and promoting a predictable healing process.

Esthetic Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening can also be performed for cosmetic purposes (esthetic crown lengthening). This option may be recommended when excess gum tissue makes teeth appear short or uneven, or to correct a “gummy” smile. By carefully reshaping the gumline, esthetic crown lengthening can improve tooth proportions and create a more balanced foundation for cosmetic dental treatment, including veneers, crowns, and other aesthetic restorations.
