Bone Loss Regeneration

Modern regenerative techniques can rebuild lost bone and give a compromised tooth its best chance of staying healthy and functional.

Bone loss does not always mean that a tooth has to be removed.

When periodontal disease or other conditions have destroyed the bone supporting a tooth, the tooth may become loose, develop deep periodontal pockets, or be recommended for extraction. However, in many situations, modern regenerative techniques can help rebuild lost bone and restore the tissues supporting the natural tooth, improving the long-term prognosis. This approach is known as periodontal regeneration.

Periodontal regeneration is a highly individualized procedure. After thoroughly evaluating the teeth, gums, bone levels, and overall periodontal health, Dr. Kelleher determines whether the pattern and severity of bone loss are favorable for regeneration. Depending on the specific defect, treatment may involve bone grafting, biologic materials such as growth factors, and/or barrier membranes designed to create an environment that supports the body’s natural ability to heal. These techniques may be used individually or in combination depending on the anatomy and needs of each case.

The goal is not simply to replace lost bone, but to create an environment that supports the long-term health, comfort, and function of the tooth. Successful periodontal regeneration depends not only on the procedure itself, but also on excellent oral hygiene and consistent periodontal maintenance afterward. Dr. Kelleher works closely with his patients to establish effective home-care habits and a personalized maintenance schedule designed to protect the results of treatment and prevent disease recurrence.

In appropriate cases, periodontal regeneration can not only delay or avoid tooth extraction, but may also help patients avoid more extensive treatment, including full-mouth dental implant reconstruction. With the right combination of regenerative treatment, daily oral hygiene, and continued professional care, the goal is to give compromised teeth the best possible chance of remaining healthy and functional for years to come. Dr. Kelleher is happy to discuss whether periodontal regeneration is right for you.
