Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding a tooth pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or its root surface.

Recession can result from periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, thin or fragile gum tissue, or bite forces, and often leads to sensitivity, an uneven smile, and a greater risk of further gum and bone loss if left untreated.

Gum grafting is a well-established, predictable way to treat recession. Using tissue grafts, Dr. Kelleher rebuilds the gum around the affected tooth or teeth, covering the exposed root surface and creating a thicker, healthier band of tissue that is more resistant to further recession.

Grafting can be performed on a single tooth or across multiple teeth, and is often paired with other periodontal treatment when recession is related to active gum disease. For patients who prefer an approach that doesn’t require donor tissue, Dr. Kelleher also offers the Pinhole Surgical Technique as an alternative way to treat recession.

Most patients see significant improvement within a few weeks of treatment, with the grafted tissue continuing to mature and stabilize over the following months.
